Lawsuit Filed to Protect the Alaska Sea Otter December 30. 2006
Conservationists have filed a lawsuit to help protect the sea otter population in Alaska.
From the Alaska Report: A conservation group filed a lawsuit Tuesday in federal district court in Washington, DC, seeking more protection for sea otters in Alaska.

The Center for Biological Diversity, a national nonprofit conservation organization that aims to conserve endangered species and wild places, says that the Bush administration has failed to designate critical habitat for sea otters in southwest Alaska, despite the species' listing as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act in August 2005. Sea otter populations have decline by 90 percent in some areas according to the group.

I bet you've been swamped with submissions, but I thought I'd send in some pictures I took at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, CO. These are Asian Small-Claw Footed Otters, and are actually really elderly - I believe 12 or 13 years old.

I've had a lot of people who love otters write to me and send me pictures but Kat really loves otters? How much? She has a tattoo of two otters on her right calf (pictured below)!

Stephanie says: Here are two pictures of river otters I took at the Dallas Zoo in Texas. I think my faovrite is 18-otter.jpg, because their play-fighting looks like they're dancing together. The other one (below) was an otter warning zoo visitors not to try to get the fish head he was about to eat, I think.

Even More Otters Holding Hands December 15. 2006
I think my favorite pictures are of sea otters holding hands. They're just such sweet, social animals and when they hold hands it's just way too cute! I should create a separate category just for hand-holding otters. This adorable picture was sent in by Susan in Sumner, Washington.
Susan Says - Here's a picture I took at the Vancouver, B.C. Aquarium. These two otter pals were sleeping like this, just floating around their pool with their paws interlocked so they wouldn't float apart. Too cute!
