Rare White Otter and Pup March 31. 2011

So fuzzy, so cute!

Sea otter moms are the best mothers ever. They float around with their tiny pups on their belly and only leave them for short times while they find food. In this incredibly cute picture, a rare white otter cares for her pup at Moss Landing, California. Thanks to Cyndie for sending me this article.

From The Daily Mail: Retired marine biology teacher Brian Maxwell, 69, captured the Intimate moments in and estuary in Moss Landing, California.

He said: 'It was just amazing that the son was content to just fall asleep anywhere.

'They were really sweet and after a while the mother got hungry and rolled her son into the water so she could dive for clams.'

Everyone loves a nap after eating.

Otters Get New Home at the Nature Center March 15. 2011

Olive and Obi-Wan have a new home at Brandon's Otter Falls at the West North Carolina Nature Center. The exhibit was named in memorial of Brandon Horne who was passionate about nature and animals.

From the Citizen-Times.com: “They could not be more excited,” said animal curator Allison Ballentine, who helped introduce Olive and Obiwan to the new space. “Otters are land mammals who just happen to enjoy water, so it's really important to be able to offer them more dry land to run around on instead of the primarily water-based habitat they've been in.”

Otter Cub Being Raised in the Edinburgh River March 12. 2011

The news about an otter cub in the Edinburgh River is more than cute, it's a great sign that the river is healthy as the otter population slowly rises.

From the BBC: She told the BBC Scotland news website: "Everyone in the city should be immensely proud that there is an otter and her cub living in their city, it is incredible.

"To have a large wild mammal, which had just about become extinct until the 70s, thriving in an urban river in the capital city shows the river is very healthy.

Otters Don't Make Good Pets March 11. 2011

No matter how cute and cuddly otters appear, they don't make good pets at all. This was one subject covered by Amanda Radek, a spokesperson for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).

From CaptivaSanibel.com: In 2010, several river otters were brought to CROW due to a variety of circumstances, including being orphaned by their mothers, attacks by other animals and distemper. Thus far this year, more than 10 otter pups have been cared for by the hospital's staff.

"It's hard work, it's stinky work, but hopefully it's very rewarding work," said Dr. Amber McNamara, director of the clinic. "We really appreciate our students here who work with them."

Sea Otter 101 March 7. 2011

The NOAA (National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration) has an adorable but informative video on their website about sea otters!

From NOAA: FOOD!! Quickly spinning the sea urchin in her paws, she breaks off the prickly spines. Using her teeth, she chomps open the body and licks out the insides. The sea otter's high metabolic rate helps them to stay warm – to fuel it each day, they have to eat 20-30% of their body weight in food! Still hungry, the otter dives below the surface again. This time she comes back with some rock crabs. Sea otters are very resourceful – a trait that helps them to survive. So it won't get away, she wraps one crab in a blade of kelp. That'll keep it in place while she snacks on the other.
