Otter Cubs Born At Sea World March 21. 2009

Two otter cubs were born at Sea World last month! Thanks to Cyndie for letting me know about these adorable newborns.

From Sea World: Two Asian small-clawed river otter pups nuzzle together at SeaWorld San Diego. Born on Feb. 7 to first-time parents Leo and Giselle, the 5-week old male and female pups are still nursing but will begin the weaning process in a month. The river otters are the co-stars of the park's sea lion and otter show. The newest show "Sea Lions LIVE" is slated to premier at SeaWorld on April 4.

(Melts) Oh man, I've just GOTTA get to Sea World!! These babies are too much! I was wondering, are otters born with teeth? Does anyone here know?

are they cubs or pups? the press release says pups. you say cubs.
#4 philliesfan on 2009-03-22 16:37 (Reply)
Yeah, as Chillyboarder pointed out, it should be pups. That was just a brain fart on my part (rhyme not intended). :-)

They even look asian lmao. Philliesfan: The correct term I think is pups. Mating takes place in the water and can be rough, the male biting the female on the muzzle – which often leaves scars on the nose – and sometimes holding her head under water. Twins occur in 2% of births; however, usually only one pup survives. Margaret: At birth, the eyes are open, ten teeth are visible, and the pup has a thick coat of baby fur.

Yes, they are pups but for some reason I wrote cubs and now I'm too lazy to change it. :-)

Actually, mating in the water and the nose biting is more of the Sea Otter. These are Asian otters and they usually mate without the unfortunate nose biting which I'm sure the females are relieved about! :-)

Does anyone know which SeaWorld they were born at? The one in San Diego, San Antonio, or Orlando?? I'd really like to know so I could go see them.

My understanding is that it's OK to call them pups OR cubs. Either way, Asian small-clawed (or short-clawed) otters are ALWAYS adorable!!!!! Thanks, Peter.

poor things. since theyre born in captivity, there's no option for them to be freed. saves sea world the money of paying poachers for two more otters. you didnt think all the animals just swam into the gates wanting to entertain us? did you?

people like you really have no idea just how much good wildlife centres do. There is a wildlife centre in the UK I'm a member of that has done more for Otters in the UK than any so called Animal rights people. They have released close to 100 otters into the wild. Whereas the animal rights idiots broke into a mink farm and released all the mink there, the mink killed off 95% of all Otters, water voles, stoats and weasels in the local area!!! the devastation they caused was horrific. The other thing that wildlife centres do is to educate people about wildlife and how we can help protect wildlife
